Happy Birthday, Harry Potter.
Today is July 31, a date every true fan knows by heart. But this year, the date feels a little more special. If you have been looking at the news lately, you know that the wizarding world is having a massive comeback in 2026. As someone who grew up waiting for a Hogwarts letter, I have a lot of feelings about everything that is happening.
Between the 25th anniversary of the first movie and the brand-new TV show coming to HBO this Christmas, we are standing at the edge of a new era. Here is my take on what this means for us fans.
Saying Goodbye to the Past (In the Best Way)
Can you believe it has been 25 years since Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone first hit theaters in 2001? To celebrate, Warner Bros. is bringing all eight original movies back to cinemas worldwide from August 27 to September 3.
What excites me the most is that the first movie will include 12 minutes of unseen behind-the-scenes footage. Going to the cinema to see Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint on the big screen again feels like a warm hug. It is a chance for us older fans to feel like kids again, and a chance for new kids to experience the magic in a dark, quiet theater.
To me, this movie marathon is more than just a celebration. It feels like a beautiful farewell party. It is a way for us to honor the movies that defined our childhood before we open our hearts to a brand-new cast.
Welcoming the New Hogwarts
Let’s talk about the giant hippogriff in the room: the new HBO TV series premiering on Christmas Day 2026.
When HBO first announced they were remaking the books into a TV show—one season for each book over 10 years—I was nervous. How do you replace actors who played these roles so perfectly? But as the news has poured in this year, my worry has turned into excitement.
First, a TV show format is exactly what the story needs. A movie is too short to fit a whole 500-page book. With eight episodes in Season 1, the writers have time to show us the small, quiet moments at Hogwarts. We finally get to see characters who were left out of the movies, like Peeves the Poltergeist!
Then, there is the cast. While it will be strange to see newcomers Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton as the main trio, the adult cast is blowing my mind. John Lithgow as Dumbledore? Brilliant. Nick Frost as Hagrid? Perfect casting. And it warms my heart to see Warwick Davis returning to play Professor Flitwick. It creates a nice bridge between the old movies and the new show.
The fact that HBO is already starting to film Season 2 (The Chamber of Secrets) next month shows they are deeply confident in what they have created.
Why We Still Care
You might ask, “Why do we need more Harry Potter?”
The answer is simple. The world today is complicated and often scary. Harry Potter reminds us of simple, powerful truths: that love is stronger than hate, that true friends will stand by you in the dark, and that even the smallest person can defeat a giant evil.
With the Cursed Child play celebrating 10 years in London, new LEGO sets coming out, and the TV show arriving on Christmas, 2026 is a golden year for fans. The magic never really left us, but this year, it is shining brighter than ever.
So, I will be buying my movie tickets for August, and I will be sitting in front of my TV on Christmas Day. Hogwarts will always be there to welcome us home, and I, for one, am ready to go back.
